its shaped kind of like a lightning whelk except its barely an inch and its tanish. I found it in west palm beach florida. i have no idea what it could be!

Sounds like it is a juvenile lightning whelk (Busycon sinistrum or Busycon contrarium - there is some discussion regarding the proper name). They start life a lot smaller than an inch, only a few millimeters in length. Check your specimen against this picture ...
