This is Papustyla pulcherrima, from Manus Island, New Guinea. It isn't extinct but it is endangered and protected. http://www.amnh.org/nationalcenter/Endangered/snail/snail.html . |

Most specimens of this species in collections are "vintage" since it has been illegal to import them for quite a few years. I read about a large shipment of jewelry that was refused entry to the United States when customs opened a box and saw one piece of jewelry that had this shell as part of it. |
