Dear Manfred,

It's a delight to receive a post from you regarding the shells ID.  Thank you very much for your contribution. In the past, we accomodate visitors as far as Germany, France, New Zealand & other countries who visit our Shell Museum. I am continuing a legacy of what my mother left me. Though I have limited knowledge re the IDs of the shells, I find it entertaining to see its individuality & marvel on its beauty.

With much appreciation,

YSa

Dear Paul,

Yahoo!!! I thought you have given up in identifying the shells. I wont get this far with this project without your help.

Just do it at your own time, I will wait.

Thank you very much,

YSa

DeaR PAul,

I started encoding the names of the Group 2 shells in my URL - http://sontillanoshells.multiply.com
I noticed that pic 63 does not have a name, neither is it in the names given by Manfred Herrmann.

You might have missed that pic.

Dear David Touitou,

Congratulations !!! I have visited your updated "Self Collected" Cone shell collection.

Will continue to use it as reference. Paul Monfils has been very helpful with the ID needs of our shell collection.

Hi all,

Being a Tonna-maniac (and only just registered on this forum), I've taken the liberty to check the names of the Tonnidae shown in Group 5. Most are correctly identified, but two corrections occur:
- Row 7, left specimen is not Tonna cepa, but Tonna canaliculata (Linnaeus, 1758). T. cepa (initially Cadus cepa Röding, 1798) is a synonym for T. canaliculata, actually.
- Row 9, middle picture is not a T. tessellata, but a Tonna allium (Dillwyn, 1817).
All other Tonna have been correctly identified before (good job, guys !!)

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the forum, David Touitou & Paul Monfils were very accomodating in identifying the shells.

Thank you very much also for taking time to share your expertise in identifying the Tonnidae shells. I will make the necessary corections asap.

I still have another group, Folder # 4 that needs identification, in case you are familiar with the specimen, I would appreciate your help.

Shell collecting is indeed a passion!!!

Hello Ysa,

Nice to meet you ... Can I conclude that "Ysacostas" has a Greek twangto it? Any relation to that beautiful country ?

Back to the shells now. I've had a quick look at Group 4, and as most are bivalves, and my knowledge on the matter is ... well ... hardly existing at all, I can only give a few hints and 2 sure names - and a lot of explanations.
OK ..; here we go .. David, Paul, please feel free to jump in at any time ..
Row 1 Shell 10 Corculum cardissa ...I think. Admitted that there are different Corculum species (or are they all varieties of a single species?), and the photograph doesn't permit detailed IDing. You might want to refer to the photo gallery on www.femorale.com.br for further identification.
Row 4 shell 19 is a Tridacna, but I can't say which species. You might want to refer to Kevin Monsecour on monsecourbrothers@skynet.be for a second opinion.
Row 5 shell 22 Photograph might show - at a weird angle - a Melo umbilicatus. I don't think it's Melo amphora, as that one doesn't have those large pins on the shoulder. My determination is supported by some of the photographs on www.conchology.be in the Voluta-section.
Row 7 shell 27 seems like a Tridacne squamosa to me. Same remark as above for the other Tridacna.
Row 9 shell 32 Seems like a Tridacna derasa (quite heavy and somewhat elongated). Same remark as above.
Row 9 shell 33 Hippopus hippopus (and I'm sure of this one !)
Row 10 shell 36, top shell is a Haliotis assinina
Row 11 shell 38, top shell is also a Haliotis assinina
Row 15 shell 5 Corculum cardissa - but same remark as with the previous one.
Row 19 shell 60 Amusium pleuronectes (?). I had a quick look in the new Conchological Iconography on Pectinidae as my first idea was Amusium papyrus, but that taxon doesn't occur in that publication. If the specimen comes from the Indian Ocean or Pacific, I would go for A. pleuronectes.
Row 26 shell 8 (middle shell) again Corculum cardissa, with the same remark as above.
Row 30 shell 9: all Corculum cardissa, provided as above.
There are quite a few photographs of starfish there ..; I know even less of those than of bivalves.

Hope the information can be of some use to you,

Cheers,

Chris

Hi again ... forgot a couple:

Row 10 shell 35 = Haliotis cf tuberculata coccinea (might be, actually. I'm comparing your photograph to the Iconography here ... very dangerous for misidentification when one isn't specialised in the matter).
Row 12 shell 40 = Haliotis assinina
Row 13 Shell 42 = haliotis iris
The other Haliotidae are too difficult to determine this way.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Ysa!

You are from Cagayan de Oro, right? Are you Filipino?

I love collecting shells, too. But no expert yet. Right now I'm focusing on cowries. I'm thinking of establishing my own website, too, and post the collection. Still a few and humble.

I know of a shell collector in La Union who passed her collection to her son. They have a shell shop but are selling only commercial shells. However, they sell shells from the collection when the price offers are tempting. The son, however, wants to keep the shells for display as much as possible.

Paul and David are rare, huh.    Really helpful.

Hi Chris,

Yes, I am a Filipino, our family hails from Cagayan de Oro. The shells shown in the http://sontillanoshells.multiply.com is the personal collection of my mother that was left to me.

Though the shells have been previously identified when my mother opened her collection to the public, the labels & the specie got separated when the collection was pulled-out & closed because my mother was hospitalized for quite some time & she was concerned of the security of the collection.

Paul & David painstakingly viewed & identified the shells. I owe them a lot of gratitude, they helped me recover from scratch.
